As your little one’s protectors, safety and comfort are top priorities, especially when you’re out on the road. So, let’s talk about a critical component of their security – head support within their car seats. In this blog post, we’re diving deep into the significance of head support, addressing those common concerns you might have, and Orbit Baby’s approach to enhancing the safety of infant car seats.

Why Is Car Seat Head Support Important?

Head support is KEY during the early stages of your little one’s development. If your newborn’s head flops forward while in their infant car seat, this is the time to make adjustments to ensure proper alignment of the head and neck.

In fact, did you know that babies have narrow airways in their throats? So, when their heads slump forward, it can squeeze the airflow, making it difficult for them to breathe freely. Additionally, your little ones may not have enough strength yet to lift their heads to a more comfortable position. For these reasons, it’s crucial to make sure your children keep their heads in the right position while they’re enjoying those car rides.

Common Concerns with Head Support

Safety and comfort go hand in hand but let’s cover those head support worries that have you wondering.

Chin-to-Chest Issues: Like the Vancouver Island Car Seat Technicians, we totally get it – one of the biggest hurdles for parents is nailing that perfect car seat recline. Here’s a pro tip: if you spot your little one’s chin falling to their chest, that’s a red flag! It could block their airway and make breathing difficult. No need to stress – act quickly and apply the proper head support while adjusting their position upright, not too tilted forward

Rolled Blankets: If you notice your newborn’s head wobbling quite a bit, we have a helpful tip. Grab two receiving blankets or burp clothes and roll them up. Then, gently tuck them alongside your baby’s whole body and if needed, double ‘em up at the head area to keep it snug and stable. If you are using an Orbit Baby Infant Car Seat, please note that the rolled blankets can be used in place of the existing head rest and the head rest may be removed in full. In addition, if you need guidance on using a rolled blanket, we at Orbit Baby offer a video call with our certified Child Passenger Safety Technicianas a FREE perk for our customers. A quick reminder – always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on rolled blankets and avoid excessive padding; too much fluff can mess with the car seat’s effectiveness.

Safe Positioning to Prevent Airway Obstruction: Proper head support is paramount during car rides – it’s all about keeping your children’s airways wide open and clear, helping them to breathe easy and avoid a lack of oxygen. Per The Car Seat Lady’s, “How to Position a Newborn’s Head in the Car Seat,” here are four important steps to keep your baby’s head supported and those airways always clear during car rides:

  1. “It’s okay if the baby’s head is turned to the side. This is a natural breathing position.
  2. Make sure the crotch buckle is snug to prevent slouching.
  3. Make sure the harness straps are snug to keep the baby’s head and body straighter.
  4. Recline the car seat as much as the instructions permit.”

Aftermarket Car Seat Accessories – Caution: While it might be tempting to add aftermarket car seat accessories for head support such as support pillows, harness covers, and seat belt adjusters, it’s important to remember safety comes first. And sticking to the car seat manufacturer’s list of approved items remains the optimal approach.

“Car seat systems have been designed to deliver maximum protection in the event of a crash when they’re installed and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions,” said Marygrace Taylor in What to Expect’s, “Why Aftermarket Car Seat Accessories Are So Unsafe.”

Keep this in mind: even adding a tiny non-regulated accessory to a car seat might affect its safety features and how it performs. Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines and steer clear of using unauthorized accessories – your objective should be to eliminate any potential risks for the well-being of your children.
